Algiers, January 5, 2026 – A comprehensive road maintenance program is set to commence nationwide, targeting Algeria’s extensive highway network. The announcement follows directives issued by the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, to expedite all projects slated for the sector in 2026.
The Minister’s instructions were delivered during a working meeting focused on reviewing the 2026 sector action plan, evaluating the progress of ongoing infrastructure projects, and initiating new developments. A key focus of the meeting was the state of Algeria’s highways and national roads.
Minister Djellaoui specifically ordered the launch of a large-scale maintenance operation for the highway network. The initial phase is scheduled to begin next week on the second bypass of Algiers, with plans to extend the program nationally, prioritizing major routes connecting the north and south of the country. The goal is to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic across Algeria.
During the meeting, Djellaoui emphasized the importance of accelerating the completion of projects in Algiers, ensuring they are delivered on schedule. He also called for intensified on-site monitoring by central and decentralized structures. Close attention will also be paid to projects included in supplementary programs for the wilayas of Djelfa, Khenchela, and Tissemsilt, with detailed reports required on all projects benefiting these regions.
Furthermore, the Minister urged the simultaneous launch of all projects included in the 2026 sector program across all wilayas of the country. This includes developing a specific action plan for monitoring strategic infrastructure projects, signing performance contracts with Directors of Public Works, and evaluating their performance based on defined key performance indicators.
Djellaoui stressed the need for precise deadlines for project delivery and proactive efforts to overcome obstacles on the ground, particularly in the southern wilayas. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving Algeria’s transportation infrastructure and promoting economic development.
