Algeria and IOM Sign Key Agreement on Migrant Support

Algiers, Algeria – A significant cooperation agreement was signed today between Algeria and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), focusing on supporting irregular migrants. The agreement will facilitate the use of the airport hotel in Dar El Beida, Algiers, to accommodate irregular migrants enrolled in the Voluntary Return and Reintegration Assistance Program.

The signing ceremony took place at the Algiers Governorate headquarters, under the supervision of Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, alongside IOM Director-General Amy Pope. The Governor of Algiers, Abd El Nour Rabehi, and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Algeria were also in attendance.

Minister Saayoud stated in a press briefing that the IOM Director-General’s visit allowed her to witness firsthand the extensive resources provided by the Algerian state for the care of irregular migrants. He also highlighted Algeria’s efforts to mitigate irregular migration through a humane and responsible approach.

The Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of irregular migration in countries of origin. He noted that the Director-General of the IOM expressed her satisfaction with the level of care provided by Algeria, both in terms of human resources and material means, across various regions of the country.

Minister of Interior Saayoud affirmed that Algeria will continue to strengthen its cooperation with international organizations, neighboring countries, and Mediterranean nations to find effective and sustainable solutions to irregular migration.

Amy Pope commended Algeria’s “responsible and humane management” of irregular migration. She expressed the IOM’s readiness to expand cooperation with Algeria in this critical area.

During the event, the IOM honored Minister Saayoud in recognition of his continuous support for IOM programs implemented in Algeria. A video presentation highlighted the Algerian government’s efforts to care for migrants, in accordance with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Prior to the signing ceremony, the Director-General of the IOM conducted a site visit to the airport hotel, examining the facilities firsthand. This agreement marks a crucial step in Algeria’s commitment to addressing migration challenges in a comprehensive and compassionate manner.
