Venezuelan Opposition Leader’s Nobel Offer to Trump Sparks Controversy

A wave of controversy has erupted following Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado’s announcement that she intends to dedicate her Nobel Peace Prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The move has drawn sharp criticism, with many deeming it disrespectful to the prestigious award and its international standing.

Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 10th of last year. According to American media outlets, Trump had allegedly expressed some discontent that she, rather than himself, was the recipient, especially considering his long-held desire to win the prize.

Trump later stated that Machado lacked respect and support within Venezuela, denying any connection between his opinion of her and her acceptance of the award.

In an interview with Fox News, Machado clarified that she decided to dedicate the prize to Trump from the moment she received it. She believes his actions warranted such recognition. “I was very clear, as soon as I learned I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, I dedicated it to President Trump because I believe he deserved it at that time,” she stated.

She further added that what occurred on January 3rd, 2026, represents, in her view, “a day that will go down in history as the day justice triumphed over tyranny.”

When questioned about whether she had actually offered to hand over the physical award to Trump, Machado indicated that it had not yet occurred. However, she expressed her desire to personally inform him that the Venezuelan people wish to grant him the award and share it with him, considering his actions a “historic step towards a democratic transition.”

Intense Criticism

Machado’s stance has triggered intense criticism across social media platforms. Many bloggers and activists argue that her actions undermine the significance of the global award, emphasizing that the Nobel Committee is the sole authority in determining its recipients.

Online commentators have expressed bewilderment, with some suggesting ulterior motives behind the offer.
