Damascus Assesses Outcome of Recent Talks with Tel Aviv

The Syrian government has yet to release an official statement regarding the talks held over the past two days with Israeli representatives in Paris, under American auspices. However, sources suggest Damascus views the discussions as a significant step towards restoring its rights and ensuring its sovereignty.

The U.S. State Department issued a joint Syrian-Israeli statement on Tuesday, indicating that the talks resulted in the establishment of a communication cell for intelligence sharing and de-escalation of military tensions between the two sides. This new mechanism also aims to promote diplomatic and commercial engagement, addressing any disputes swiftly under American supervision, according to the statement.

According to unconfirmed reports, the discussions centered on the 1974 disengagement agreement and the necessity of Israel’s withdrawal from territories occupied after December 8, 2024. Israel currently controls a large area extending from the Damascus countryside to the western Quneitra and Daraa regions.

The joint statement did not explicitly mention the 1974 disengagement agreement. However, sources claim the talks fall under an equitable security agreement that prioritizes Syrian sovereignty and prevents Israeli interference in Syrian internal affairs.

The primary objective of these talks is reportedly to restore all Syrian territories through dialogue with Israel. This approach aligns with the new Syrian government’s desire to avoid armed conflict and resolve issues with neighboring countries through negotiation.

Damascus reportedly views the newly agreed-upon mechanism as an important step towards reclaiming its rights from Israel and preventing further violations of its territory. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of this new diplomatic approach. DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation closely.
