Agricultural producers in Algeria are set to benefit from a new government-backed program designed to boost storage capacity and reduce post-harvest losses. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced a significant initiative offering subsidized bank loans for the construction of cold storage facilities.
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Agricultural Services in Tipaza, eligible farmers, including landowners and those with concession agreements, can access loans of up to 150 million Algerian dinars. These funds are specifically earmarked for the construction of refrigerated storage units, ranging in capacity from 300 to 5000 cubic meters. The size of the loan and the storage facility will be tailored to the individual investor’s activity and production capacity, focusing on those handling perishable goods.
The initiative aims to address a critical need for improved storage infrastructure within the agricultural sector. By providing access to affordable financing, the government hopes to encourage investment in cold storage technology, thereby reducing spoilage and ensuring a more stable supply of agricultural products throughout the year.
Several major public banks are participating in the program, including BEA, BDL, BADR, CNEP, CPA, and BNA. This widespread involvement ensures that farmers across the country will have access to the funding needed to upgrade their storage capabilities.
This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the agricultural sector, contributing to increased efficiency, reduced waste, and improved food security. The program underscores the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and modernizing the agricultural industry.
