Algeria and IOM Sign Agreement to Improve Migrant Healthcare

Algiers, January 9, 2026 – The Algerian Ministry of Health and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing healthcare services and assistance for migrants and refugees within the country.

The MOU, signed yesterday evening by the Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Ait Messoudane, and the IOM Director General, Amy Pope, reflects a mutual commitment to strengthen partnerships and expand cooperation in areas that will improve healthcare provisions for migrants and refugees, while also bolstering the response to related health challenges.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, the agreement seeks to improve health services and strengthen assistance provided to migrants and refugees, particularly vulnerable groups. Collaborative efforts will focus on several key areas.

These areas include: enhancing the capabilities of healthcare professionals through targeted training programs, supporting health facilities based on identified needs, and improving preparedness for health emergencies and crises. The MOU also aims to strengthen health monitoring capacities in border regions, improve the effectiveness of the epidemiological surveillance system, facilitate the exchange of expertise, ensure access to healthcare services, and conduct joint studies on areas of mutual interest.

The Minister of Health emphasized that the signing of the MOU reflects Algeria’s commitment to the principles of humanitarian solidarity and its dedication to ensuring the right to health for refugees and migrants, in accordance with national laws and relevant international conventions. He stated that this approach is rooted in the core values of the Algerian people and the principles established during the liberation revolution, which are based on supporting just causes, respecting human dignity, and promoting solidarity and humanitarian cooperation.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination and consultation with international partners to improve cooperation mechanisms and enhance the health response to various challenges.

The IOM Director General expressed her appreciation for Algeria’s efforts in providing healthcare to refugees and migrants, commending the country’s policies and measures taken in this regard.
