Algiers, January 10, 2026 – The Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts commemorated the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the National Theater of Algeria with a series of events. The celebration coincided with the launch of a collective book titled, “Abdelkader Alloula: The Generous Never Depart.”
The Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, inaugurated the festivities with a tour of an art exhibition held in the theater’s foyer. The exhibition featured paintings dedicated to the memory of Abdelkader Alloula, honoring his prolific career in Algerian theater and visual arts. The artwork served as a tribute to his enduring creativity and contributions to national culture.
In her address, Minister Bendouda emphasized that “since its establishment in 1963, the National Theater of Algeria has been a leading artistic and intellectual institution, contributing to the formation of generations of creators and establishing theatrical traditions based on commitment and quality.” She further stated that “this celebration reinforces the role of theater as a space for expressing the hopes and aspirations of society and its historical and cultural heritage, while enhancing awareness of the national artistic heritage.”
The Minister also highlighted the career of the late Abdelkader Alloula, recognizing him as a pioneer of Algerian theater who believed in its power as a humanitarian message and a social force. She also outlined the Ministry’s efforts to promote theatrical creativity and to establish January 8th as National Theater Day, in recognition of the importance of theater in building cultural awareness.
A highlight of the event was the honoring of the late Abdelkader Alloula’s family, represented by his wife, Radjaa Alloula, in recognition of his legacy and enduring contributions to Algerian theater. Three awards were also presented to winning artists. The audience was also treated to a theatrical performance featuring selected scenes from Alloula’s play, “Al-Ajwad,” presented by the Al-Istijmam troupe from Oran. This artistic moment served to evoke the spirit of the late playwright and his creative accomplishments, reinforcing the value of cultural memory.
