Rashida Tlaib Seeks to Compel US Action Against Israel

US Representative Rashida Tlaib has revealed details of a congressional resolution aimed at holding Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza. In an interview, Tlaib outlined the resolution, which asserts that the treatment of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip constitutes genocide. She argues that this legal designation would trigger direct obligations for the United States, as a signatory to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Tlaib emphasized that the resolution is based on explicit legal language drawn directly from the international convention to which the US is a party. She stated that this move goes beyond mere political or moral condemnation, compelling the United States to activate its legal commitments regarding the situation in Gaza.

The congresswoman criticized Washington’s involvement in what she described as the ‘genocide.’ ‘Our country, despite its ability to stop what has been happening for years, could have stopped this a long time ago, but that didn’t happen, and war crime after war crime was committed before our eyes,’ she stated.

Tlaib stressed the importance of continuing to use the correct legal term for what is happening in Gaza. ‘I don’t want us to stop talking about Gaza, and I don’t want us to stop calling what is happening by its real name: it is genocide,’ she affirmed.

According to Tlaib, the resolution, introduced on the anniversary of the adoption of the Genocide Convention, aims to highlight the US’s failure to fulfill its legal obligations regarding the Israeli government, despite being a signatory to the convention. The resolution seeks to activate the legal obligations stipulated in the convention.

Tlaib noted that the resolution currently has the support of approximately 21 other members of the House of Representatives. She asserted that its passage would signify US recognition of the Israeli government committing genocide, legally requiring specific actions, including halting military funding and imposing an arms embargo.

If passed, the resolution could significantly alter the relationship between the United States and Israel. The text of the resolution has not yet been publicly released.
