The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has issued a statement calling for solidarity and unity among supporters following the national team’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations. The FAF urged fans to continue supporting the ‘Les Fennecs’ during this critical period, while also confirming that it has formally requested an investigation into the performance of referee Issa Sy and his team during the recent match against Nigeria.
In a statement published on its official website, the FAF acknowledged the team’s elimination from the quarter-finals but emphasized the need to rally behind the national team, which is currently undergoing a rebuilding phase focused on gradual improvement. The federation highlighted the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in less than five months, stressing the importance of calm, comprehensive mobilization, and unwavering support from all stakeholders.
The FAF lauded the players and coaching staff for their commitment, dedication, and determination throughout the continental tournament, asserting that their efforts deserve recognition and encouragement from the entire Algerian football family.
However, the FAF made it clear that it could not overlook the refereeing performance in the match against Nigeria. The statement indicated that the officiating raised numerous questions and created a sense of bewilderment, suggesting that certain decisions undermined the credibility of African refereeing and tarnished the image of continental football on the international stage.
The Algerian FA announced that it has officially contacted both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, submitting a formal complaint accompanied by a request for a thorough investigation. The aim is to shed light on the recorded incidents and ensure that appropriate measures are taken in accordance with established regulations. The FAF insists on transparency and accountability.
The FAF concluded its statement by emphasizing the need to learn from this experience and strengthen ongoing efforts to adequately prepare for future competitions, with the ultimate goal of returning stronger and more competitive. The Federation reiterated its commitment to working steadfastly and resolutely, harnessing all available human, technical, and organizational resources to maintain the national team’s position among the best and continue to bring joy to Algerian fans. It also thanked the supporters and the media for their unwavering support of ‘Les Fennecs’ throughout their journey.
