Algerian football mourns the loss of Rolland Courbis, the former coach who passed away earlier today at the age of 72. Courbis, a well-known figure in French football, had a distinguished career both as a player and a manager.
Born in Marseille, Courbis began his playing career as a defender, representing several clubs including his hometown club Marseille, Ajaccio, and Monaco. He also played for Olympiacos in Greece, Sochaux, and Toulon. He transitioned into management in 1986, initially taking charge of Toulon.
Throughout his managerial career, Courbis coached numerous teams, including Bordeaux, Marseille, Lens, Montpellier, Al Wahda (UAE), and USM Alger in Algeria. He also briefly managed the Niger national team. His last coaching role was with Rennes in 2016.
Courbis enjoyed success as both a player and a coach. As a player, he won the Greek League title in 1974 and the French League title with Monaco in 1978 and 1982, as well as the French Cup in 1980. As a coach, notable achievements include winning the Algerian Cup and the Arab Club Championship in 2013. He also led Bordeaux to the final of the French League Cup in 1997 and guided Toulon to promotion to the French top flight in 1983.
Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Courbis was known for his outspoken personality and passionate approach to the game. After retiring from coaching, he became a respected football pundit and advisor, providing analysis for various media outlets. His contributions to French and Algerian football will be remembered.
