Sudan: UAE Accused of Fueling Conflict, 115 Figures Sign Letter

KHARTOUM – A coalition of Sudanese political forces and prominent figures has formally accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of directly contributing to the ongoing conflict in Sudan by supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The accusation was delivered in a memorandum submitted to the African Union (AU) on Monday.

The memorandum, signed by 25 Sudanese political entities, tribal leadership organizations, and approximately 115 national figures, academics, human rights activists, and civil society members, was addressed to the Chairperson of the AU Commission and members of the Peace and Security Council. Signatories include representatives from the National Umma Party, the Democratic Unionist Party-Original, the National Movement Forces Alliance, and numerous other political and civil groups.

The document sharply criticizes what it describes as attempts to legitimize the war and normalize the control of what they term “militias.” It directly implicates the UAE in prolonging the conflict through its alleged support of the RSF.

The memorandum is a direct response to a previous submission by the ‘Somoud Alliance’ earlier in January. The signatories vehemently rejected what they consider the Somoud Alliance’s misrepresentation of Sudanese civil forces and its alleged political blackmail aimed at imposing peace initiatives that serve external agendas at the expense of Sudanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Sudanese figures asserted that ignoring the UAE’s role in the conflict constitutes a serious oversight by African institutions. They pointed out that the UAE’s involvement is no longer a matter of international dispute, citing reports from international human rights organizations, global media outlets, and explicit statements from prominent American politicians. Despite this, the memorandum claims, the African Union remains silent on the destructive role the UAE is playing in Sudan and the broader continent.

The memorandum further alleges that the Somoud Alliance is directly or indirectly working to advance the UAE’s agenda within Sudan by promoting biased initiatives and downplaying the widespread abuses committed by the RSF, effectively undermining the essence of civil and democratic discourse.
