Medvedev Warns US: Greenland Could Vote to Join Russia

Moscow, January 13, 2026 – Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, has issued a stark warning to the United States regarding the future of Greenland. Medvedev suggested that the inhabitants of Greenland might choose to align themselves with Russia if the US does not act decisively.

According to reports, Medvedev stated that Greenland’s population could vote to join the Russian Federation if swift action isn’t taken. He emphasized that former President Donald Trump needs to accelerate any plans regarding the Arctic island.

Medvedev reportedly said, “According to unverified information, a snap referendum could be held in a few days, in which all 55,000 residents of Greenland could vote to join Russia. Then that’s it. No new little stars on the American flag.”

While the Kremlin has remained silent on renewed US interest in acquiring Greenland, it has consistently described the Arctic region as an area of significant national and strategic interest for Russia. Last year, Moscow stated it was closely monitoring the discussions surrounding Greenland.

Germany has also weighed in, stating they do not anticipate any military action by the United States regarding the island. The situation remains fluid, with the future of Greenland and its relationship with both the US and Russia uncertain.
