Minister Krikou Visits National Meteorological Office

Algiers, January 13, 2026 – The Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouther Krikou, paid a working visit to the headquarters of the National Meteorological Office earlier today. The visit was attended by a selection of experts and members of the National Climate Committee.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, this visit forms part of broader “sectoral coordination aimed at supporting and empowering various entities, thereby contributing to the success of the national plan for adapting to climate change. This includes integrating climate considerations into regional development plans, in line with the strategic efforts undertaken by the National Meteorological Office in this field.”

The visit provided an opportunity to “examine the functions of the Office and its pivotal role in monitoring and analyzing climate change, preparing weather and climate forecasts, as well as producing forward-looking indicators and data that form a cornerstone for formulating national policies in the field on a scientific basis,” the statement added.

Minister Krikou also reviewed the efforts being made in the field of developing early warning systems, recognizing them as a strategic mechanism for enhancing prevention of natural hazards associated with climate change and mitigating their impacts. These systems are crucial for protecting Algerian citizens and infrastructure from increasingly frequent and severe weather events.

The Minister emphasized the importance of continued investment in meteorological infrastructure and expertise to ensure Algeria remains at the forefront of climate monitoring and adaptation efforts. She reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the National Meteorological Office in its vital mission.
