Algiers – Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Abdelhak Saihi, received Halim Hamzaoui, the Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Office in Algeria, at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding areas of joint partnership.
The discussions centered on exploring avenues for enhanced collaboration in occupational health and safety, social protection, social dialogue, and employment, aligning with current economic and social transformations.
During the meeting, the ILO Director expressed appreciation for the strong relationship between Algeria and the organization. He commended the level of coordination with the Ministry of Labor and the efforts made in implementing projects of mutual interest, particularly those related to improving working conditions and promoting social justice.
Minister Saihi emphasized the sector’s commitment to expanding and strengthening the social protection system, especially in occupational health and safety. He highlighted specialized bodies and a stringent national legislative framework that criminalizes child labor and protects workers’ rights. The Minister also underscored the comprehensive reforms undertaken by the state in social protection, reflecting the public authorities’ commitment to social justice and equal opportunities.
The Minister stressed Algeria’s continued efforts to broaden the scope of social protection to include various segments of society, while working to provide a safe and healthy work environment and promote social dialogue. This aims to ensure a balance between the requirements of economic development and the preservation of social rights.
The ILO Director lauded Algeria’s efforts in the fields of labor and employment, affirming the organization’s readiness to continue supporting programs and projects aimed at developing social policies and promoting occupational health and safety. He emphasized the importance of continuous coordination to address economic and social challenges, consolidate social stability, and achieve sustainable development.
This meeting marks a significant step towards deepening cooperation between the Ministry of Labor and the ILO, in line with shared goals.
