Algeria Forges Strategic Partnership with ILO on Social Protection

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria is deepening its collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) through a strategic partnership focused on bolstering social protection measures. This initiative aims to enhance worker welfare, promote safe working environments, and foster constructive social dialogue.

The Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Abdelhak Saihi, met with Halim Hamzaoui, the Director of the ILO Office in Algeria, in Algiers on Tuesday to discuss avenues for strengthening cooperation. Discussions centered on key areas such as occupational health and safety, social protection frameworks, promoting social dialogue, and boosting employment opportunities.

During the meeting, Hamzaoui expressed the ILO’s appreciation for the strong and enduring relationship it shares with Algeria. He also commended the Ministry’s commitment to implementing joint projects designed to improve working conditions and social security.

Minister Saihi emphasized the Algerian government’s dedication to prioritizing social protection for all workers, particularly in the realm of occupational health and safety. He highlighted the existence of specialized bodies dedicated to ensuring worker well-being and referenced the nation’s legislative framework, which strictly prohibits child labor.

Saihi further elaborated on the comprehensive reforms undertaken by the state to advance social justice and equal opportunity. These reforms, he stated, reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to expanding social protection to encompass all segments of society. He stressed Algeria’s ongoing efforts to create safe and healthy work environments while fostering social dialogue to balance economic development with the protection of worker rights.

The ILO representative lauded Algeria’s efforts in the areas of labor, employment, and social protection, offering the organization’s support for projects aimed at strengthening occupational health and safety standards and developing effective social policies. Hamzaoui underscored the importance of continuous coordination between the Ministry and the ILO to address socioeconomic challenges, promote social stability, and achieve sustainable development.

The meeting served as a valuable platform for exchanging perspectives on future opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation and further solidify the partnership between Algeria and the ILO.
