Algerian Army Foils Major Drug Smuggling Attempt from Morocco

Algiers, January 14, 2026 – Units of the People’s National Army (ANP) have successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of processed cannabis into Algeria via the Moroccan border, DZWatch has learned.

According to an operational report released by the ANP, the operation, conducted between January 8th and 13th, 2026, resulted in the seizure of 304 kilograms of processed cannabis. The operation was carried out by joint detachments of the ANP, in coordination with various security services across different military regions.

In addition to the cannabis seizure, authorities apprehended 40 drug traffickers during the same period. The report also detailed the confiscation of 34.7 kilograms of cocaine and 222,218 psychotropic tablets.

Furthermore, ANP detachments in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and Illizi apprehended 200 individuals involved in illegal activities. They also seized 36 vehicles, 132 generators, and 107 pressure hammers, along with quantities of raw gold and stone mixtures, and equipment used in illegal gold mining operations.

In separate operations, 12 individuals were arrested, and authorities confiscated an FMPK machine gun, three Kalashnikov submachine guns, four hunting rifles, and 33,050 liters of fuel intended for smuggling.

The Coast Guard also intercepted several attempts at illegal migration, rescuing 71 individuals aboard makeshift vessels. Across the country, 205 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were apprehended.

The ANP’s ongoing efforts underscore Algeria’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, illegal mining, and other illicit activities across its borders.
