Annaba Dismantles Cyber Fraud Ring Targeting Postal Service Users

Annaba, Algeria – Law enforcement authorities in Annaba have successfully dismantled a sophisticated criminal network engaged in large-scale fraud and deception, targeting unsuspecting members of the public through the misuse of information and communication technologies.

According to a statement released by the National Gendarmerie’s Research and Investigation Unit in Annaba, the operation culminated in the arrest of ten individuals implicated in the elaborate scheme. The criminals allegedly impersonated representatives of Algeria Post ( البريد الجزائر), a national postal service, to defraud victims.

During the operation, authorities seized a significant amount of evidence, including mobile phones, a laptop computer, a computer central processing unit, and a sum of money amounting to 52,000 Algerian dinars. Investigations revealed that the total financial transactions facilitated by the network exceeded 1.6 billion centimes.

A comprehensive legal file has been prepared, and the individuals involved are now facing prosecution before the competent judicial authorities in the region. The charges levied against them include the formation of an organized criminal group for the purpose of preparing a misdemeanor, the commission of fraud and deception, the unlawful acquisition of property through the use of information and communication technologies, offenses against automated data processing systems, and the fraudulent insertion of data into automated processing systems through alteration and deletion of existing data. Additionally, they are accused of impersonating others in circumstances that could lead to the erroneous entry of a conviction in the criminal record of an innocent party.

This successful operation underscores the commitment of the National Gendarmerie to combating cybercrime and protecting citizens from financial fraud in the digital age. The authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when interacting with unsolicited communications, especially those requesting personal or financial information.
