National Program Launched for East-West Highway Maintenance

Algiers, January 14, 2026 – A nationwide program dedicated to the maintenance of the East-West Highway has been announced for 2026. The General Manager of the Algerian Highway Authority revealed the initiative, highlighting its importance for national infrastructure.

Speaking on national radio, the Director General explained that the Authority is currently undertaking an economic feasibility study and technical expertise assessment covering 926 kilometers of the vital East-West artery. This assessment spans from the Tlemcen border to the El Tarf province, encompassing a significant portion of the highway’s length.

The program will prioritize specific sections of the highway requiring urgent attention. Among these is the section connecting Bir Touta and Khemis El Khechna, which has deteriorated significantly. Other key areas include the Constantine bypass, stretching 17 kilometers, the Bouira-Larbatache segment, and a similar section in Ain Defla province.

“These sections represent a top priority,” the Director General stated, emphasizing the commitment to commencing maintenance work as soon as possible on a total distance of approximately 51 kilometers. He added that the necessary financial allocations have been earmarked within the 2026 Finance Law, paving the way for the immediate implementation of the program. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Algeria’s critical transportation infrastructure.
