Algeria and Italy Affirm Strong Strategic Partnership

The President of the Council of the Nation, Azzouz Nasseri, received the Ambassador of Italy to Algeria, Alberto Cutillo, at the Council headquarters on Wednesday. The meeting served as a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening cooperation and consultation between the two nations.

Nasseri welcomed the Italian Ambassador, highlighting the depth and strength of the historical ties between Algeria and Italy. He emphasized that these relations are rooted in a shared civilizational and humanitarian heritage, as well as the solidarity shown by the Italian people and their political and intellectual elites during the Algerian War of Independence. This support, he noted, played a significant role in internationalizing the Algerian cause and solidifying its place in European memory. Nasseri affirmed that this positive historical foundation has created a solid base for building a strategic partnership based on mutual trust and respect.

He praised the positive momentum in bilateral relations in recent years, particularly following the official visit of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Rome. This visit, Nasseri stated, provided a new impetus to the strategic partnership between the two countries, driven by a shared political will to elevate cooperation to broader and more comprehensive horizons.

Nasseri also lauded his discussions with the President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa, in Rome, during his participation as the President’s representative in the Aqaba Process meeting on West Africa. He emphasized the importance of this meeting in strengthening political and parliamentary coordination, and in solidifying the role of parliamentary diplomacy as a key pillar in supporting bilateral relations and exchanging expertise.

Ambassador Cutillo affirmed that Algeria is Italy’s primary economic partner in Africa and a strategic partner with a central role in his country’s economic and energy policy. He commended Algeria’s vital role in supporting Italian energy security, and appreciated its ongoing commitment to making a positive contribution in this area. He also expressed Italy’s readiness to expand areas of partnership and offer its expertise, particularly in the fields of transport and road safety, to Algeria.

Nasseri highlighted the vast opportunities offered by the Algerian market in light of ongoing economic reforms, especially following the issuance of the new investment law. He emphasized Algeria’s interest in developing quality partnerships with Italian institutions in the fields of industry, agriculture, renewable energy, the circular economy, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
