Hamas Reportedly Open to Disarmament; Trump Seeks Turkish Role in Gaza

Hamas has reportedly expressed a willingness to accept a US-backed disarmament plan and begin surrendering its weapons as the second phase of the Gaza agreement commences. This development, if confirmed, could represent a significant step towards a lasting peace in the region.

The proposed plan, reportedly developed by the Trump administration, envisions a phased and gradual disarmament process. The initial stage would focus on dismantling what has been described as the ‘infrastructure of terror,’ including tunnels and weapons manufacturing facilities. Heavy weaponry and rockets would be collected and placed in secure locations, preventing their use in attacks.

Simultaneously, a new police force would be established in Gaza, operating under the authority of a technocratic government. This force would be responsible for maintaining security and order, with the exclusive right to bear arms.

US officials have reportedly expressed optimism about the feasibility of the plan, with President Trump personally invested in its success. One official noted that Hamas has been sending positive signals regarding disarmament, expressing hope that this stance is genuine and not merely a facade.

The reported agreement by Hamas to disarm is considered crucial for transitioning from a truce to a durable peace in Gaza. A key factor hinges on Hamas relinquishing its weapons and the subsequent withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory.

On the Israeli side, there are indications of a reluctant agreement to proceed to the ‘second phase’ of the Gaza agreement. This is reportedly motivated by the failure to recover the remains of a deceased hostage under the terms of the ‘first phase.’

Beyond the US, other mediators, including Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, are reportedly optimistic about the prospects for peace. One US official stated: ‘We have a plan for disarmament. The President wants to see it happen. Hamas indicates that it will happen. We believe it is achievable.’

However, the official cautioned that the ‘mission is not yet complete’ until the remains of the remaining hostage are found, emphasizing that this should not impede progress towards a comprehensive peace agreement.

The potential role of Turkey in the future of Gaza is also reportedly under consideration by the Trump administration. This could involve Turkish involvement in reconstruction efforts or security arrangements within the territory.
