The municipality of Ashkelon, in southern Israel, announced Thursday the opening of public shelters throughout the city. This decision comes amid heightened regional tensions and concerns regarding a potential U.S. strike against Iran. The move mirrors similar precautions taken by other Israeli cities, including Dimona in the Negev, Beersheba, and Gan Yavne.
In a statement released on its Telegram channel, the Ashkelon municipality stated, “Following the declaration of a state of maximum alert in the Ashkelon municipality last night in light of security developments, we would like to inform you that as of last night, public shelters in Ashkelon have been opened.”
The municipality emphasized that “currently, there is no warning or concrete indication of a direct threat to the city of Ashkelon.” However, they explained that opening the shelters is intended “to enhance residents’ sense of security.” The municipality added that it “will maintain a state of maximum alert and vigilance and is prepared for any scenario or change that may occur.”
This action follows the Israeli military’s announcement Wednesday evening that it was bolstering its defensive readiness and closely monitoring regional developments. This prompted the municipalities of Beersheba, Gan Yavne, and Dimona, located in southern and central Israel, to announce the opening of public shelters in their respective cities that same evening.
Tensions have been escalating between the United States and its ally, Israel, and Iran, particularly following the outbreak of public protests in Iran on December 28th over deteriorating economic and living conditions. Statements from both American and Israeli officials have revealed Washington and Tel Aviv’s aspirations for the downfall of the current regime in Tehran, which has been in power since 1979.
Some estimations within Israel suggest that the United States will launch an attack on Iran “in the coming days,” with Tel Aviv expected to receive advance warning hours before the operation commences. Concerns have also been raised regarding Iran’s efforts to rebuild its ballistic missile capabilities, which were reportedly damaged in past conflicts.
These developments highlight the volatile security situation in the region and the heightened state of alert among Israeli authorities. The opening of public shelters serves as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and security of Israeli citizens in the face of potential threats.
