Aleppo, Syria – Reports are emerging from the Aleppo region of Syria indicating a split within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and a subsequent exodus of civilians. According to sources, fighters stationed on the Deir Hafer front have reportedly abandoned their positions and defected from the SDF.
Simultaneously, a number of residents from the surrounding area have sought refuge in a displacement center located in the city of Manbij, situated in the Aleppo countryside. These civilians reportedly managed to escape areas under SDF control, navigating precarious routes to reach safety.
The reported defections and displacement come amid heightened tensions in the region. While details remain scarce, the situation highlights the fragile security landscape and the ongoing humanitarian challenges facing civilians caught in the crossfire.
Further complicating matters, the SDF has reportedly closed crossings connecting areas under their control with those held by the Syrian government in Al-Tabqah, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor. Exceptions are allegedly being made for approved humanitarian organizations and emergency medical cases.
The Syrian Army’s operations command has accused elements affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), allegedly allied with the SDF, of obstructing civilians attempting to use a designated humanitarian corridor near Deir Hafer. The army announced an extension of the corridor’s operating hours and warned against any interference with civilian passage, vowing to target any entities impeding their movement.
These developments unfold as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a peaceful resolution. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently stated his hope that ongoing negotiations with the SDF will lead to a peaceful solution. He also asserted the Syrian state’s constitutional right to use force against the SDF if they fail to comply with agreements.
The situation in the Aleppo region remains fluid and is being closely monitored. DZWatch will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
