EU Calls Emergency Meeting Over Greenland Tariffs

The European Union has called an emergency meeting today in response to the United States’ decision to impose tariffs on several European nations. The tariffs, reportedly impacting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, stem from the ongoing dispute surrounding Greenland.

The move by the U.S. has been met with strong condemnation from European leaders, with many describing the tariffs as “unacceptable.” According to reports, the U.S. is threatening to raise tariffs on Greenland-related goods to 25% starting in June, maintaining them until an agreement is reached regarding the potential purchase of the island by the United States.

The imposition of tariffs follows a joint military exercise in Greenland involving personnel from France, Sweden, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom, conducted in conjunction with Denmark and other NATO allies.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed the EU’s full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing the bloc’s unity and commitment to preserving its sovereignty. She warned that the tariffs could undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous escalation.

European Council President Antonio Costa affirmed the EU’s unwavering commitment to defending international law. He stated that the EU will jointly consider a response to the U.S. threats concerning tariffs on European countries due to their stance on the Greenland issue.

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the sentiment, stating that the tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in the current context. He asserted that Europe would respond in a unified and coordinated manner to ensure the respect of European sovereignty, adding that no intimidation or threats would sway their position on Greenland or any other global issue. The situation remains fluid, and DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.
