UAE and India Forge Strategic Defense Partnership

The United Arab Emirates and India have signed a letter of intent outlining a strategic partnership in the defense sector. The agreement was formalized during a visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to New Delhi.

According to reports, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the exchange of several agreements, memoranda of understanding, and letters of intent aimed at strengthening and developing cooperation between the two nations. These agreements were part of the UAE President’s official working visit to India.

While details remain limited, the letter of intent specifically addresses a “strategic partnership in the defense field.” The agreement was signed by UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

Indian Perspective

Following the signing, the Indian Minister of External Affairs stated that the letter of intent with the UAE does not necessarily imply India’s involvement in regional conflicts.

Regional Implications

Emirati political analyst Abdulkhaleq Abdulla welcomed the signing of the letter of intent, stating that it was a “masterstroke.” He suggested the agreement would lead to collaboration on advanced projects in the nuclear field.

The announcement of this partnership comes amid reports of Pakistan preparing a draft trilateral defense agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Beyond Defense

In addition to the defense agreement, Abu Dhabi and New Delhi also finalized a $3 billion deal for India to purchase liquefied natural gas from the UAE over a 10-year period. Both parties also agreed to double bilateral trade to $200 billion by 2032.

Furthermore, a letter of intent was exchanged between the UAE Space Agency and the Indian National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization. This agreement aims to launch a joint initiative focused on empowering and developing the space industry.
