Algeria, Indonesia Explore Enhanced Energy and Mining Ties

Algeria and Indonesia are exploring avenues to strengthen cooperation in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors. Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received a high-level delegation from Indonesia, led by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Sudariono, at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday.

The meeting, attended by the Secretary of State in charge of Mines, Karima Bekir Tafer, the Indonesian Ambassador to Algeria, the CEO of Sonarem, Reda Belhadj, and several officials from both sides, focused on bolstering Algerian-Indonesian relations, particularly in the energy and mining domains. Discussions revolved around potential partnerships between institutions of the two countries, driven by growing interest from Indonesian companies like Pertamina and Pupuk Indonesia in investing in Algeria.

Talks also touched upon strengthening collaboration between Sonatrach and Pertamina in the oil and gas industry, including liquefied natural gas (LNG). Furthermore, possibilities for cooperation between Sonarem and its subsidiaries with Pupuk Indonesia in phosphate and fertilizer projects were examined.

In the mining sector, both parties explored opportunities in the exploitation, processing, and marketing of phosphates, as well as the production of various types of fertilizers, aiming to create added value and enhance national production capacities.

Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to building balanced and fruitful strategic partnerships with friendly nations, based on mutual benefit, technology transfer, and the valorization of national resources. He underscored the importance of learning from successful international experiences, particularly Indonesia’s expertise in developing phosphate fertilizer processing industries.
