Algeria and Russia Explore Expanded Economic Partnership

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria and Russia are actively exploring avenues to broaden their economic partnership and strengthen parliamentary cooperation. Discussions are underway to move beyond traditional collaboration towards more dynamic and practical partnerships based on joint investments.

The focus includes leveraging Algeria’s strategic geographic location as a gateway to African markets. During a meeting with the Vice-President of the People’s National Assembly, Mohamed Ouakli, the head of the Russian delegation, Dmitry Sablin, emphasized the importance of opening new areas for investment between the two countries. He highlighted the potential of utilizing Algeria as a platform for accessing African markets and developing parliamentary consultation mechanisms.

Sablin pointed out that expanding cooperation, particularly in the industrial, agricultural, and modern technology sectors, would enhance the economic capabilities of both nations and foster long-term partnerships. These partnerships would be built on mutual benefits and the exchange of expertise.

Ouakli affirmed that Russia is a significant trading partner for Algeria. He expressed Algeria’s aspiration to build effective economic cooperation, especially in the fields of energy and mining. He extended an invitation to Russian companies to invest in the Algerian market, recognizing its strategic access to the African continent.

On the political front, the Vice-President of the People’s National Assembly acknowledged Russia’s supportive stance on the Palestinian cause and the Western Sahara issue. He emphasized that the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali, known as the Algiers Agreement, remains the most suitable framework for addressing crises in the Sahel region.

Ouakli highlighted the deep historical ties between Algeria and Russia since Algeria’s independence. He noted the positive outcomes achieved through bilateral cooperation, particularly following the signing of the Enhanced Strategic Partnership Agreement in 2023 between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Russian counterpart. This partnership signals a new era of intensified collaboration between the two nations.

The visit of the Russian delegation, which began on January 19th and concludes on January 23rd, underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthening their strategic alliance and exploring new opportunities for mutual growth and development. Future collaborations are expected to focus on key sectors that will drive economic diversification and sustainable development in both Algeria and Russia.
