Algeria Reaffirms Disarmament Commitment at Geneva Conference

Geneva – Algeria has reiterated its unwavering commitment to disarmament efforts during the 2026 session of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. Ambassador Rachid Bladehane, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, addressed the plenary session, reaffirming Algeria’s support for multilateralism and the promotion of international peace and security.

In his address, Ambassador Bladehane emphasized Algeria’s adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools to overcome the current impasse hindering tangible progress on international disarmament issues. He highlighted Algeria’s steadfast commitment to supporting international efforts in this field across various platforms, recalling its role during its tenure on the Security Council for the period 2024-2025.

The Permanent Representative also drew attention to emerging challenges posed by current geopolitical risks and the unprecedented pace of technological development, and their potential direct impact on the disarmament system. He called for updating and strengthening the international legal framework with binding and flexible mechanisms to keep pace with these transformations, contributing to the prevention of potential repercussions and ensuring the protection of international peace and security.
