Algeria and Indonesia: Parliamentary Push for Stronger Ties

A recent visit by the Algerian-Indonesian Parliamentary Friendship Group to Indonesia has concluded, marking a significant step towards bolstering bilateral cooperation. The visit, characterized by a packed schedule of meetings and discussions, aimed to strengthen parliamentary ties and propel the partnership between the two nations to new heights.

The culmination of the visit was a meeting between the Algerian parliamentary delegation, led by Deputy Benhamouda Mohamed Yazid, and the Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anies Mata. Discussions centered on the historical, fraternal, and political bonds shared by Algeria and Indonesia. These strong foundations, it was agreed, pave the way for promising economic relations, offering significant opportunities for growth and diversification given the resources and strategic locations of both countries.

The Algerian delegation commenced its visit in Bandung, a city holding historical significance as a key site for promoting the Algerian revolution during the 1955 Bandung Conference. The idea of establishing a twinning agreement between Bandung and the Algerian city of Guelma received enthusiastic support and praise from the Indonesian side.

Further demonstrating the deepening relationship, a meeting was held at the House of Representatives, where both delegations exchanged views on a range of issues of mutual legislative interest. Emphasis was placed on the need to support collaboration in higher education and scientific research, alongside diversifying economic partnerships.

Meetings between members of the Algerian parliamentary delegation and deputy ministers of higher education, tourism, and development and planning further reinforced this commitment. The importance of strengthening sector-specific cooperation and intensifying joint coordination was a recurring theme.

The Algerian-Indonesian Parliamentary Friendship Group also received a warm welcome from the Secretary-General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). During this meeting, the head of the Algerian group extended a formal invitation from the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, Mr. Ibrahim Boughali, for a visit to Algeria.

A reciprocal visit from the Indonesian Parliamentary Friendship Group to Algeria is anticipated to follow, further cementing the growing ties between the two nations. This dynamic parliamentary exchange signals a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations across various sectors. The focus on economic diversification and educational collaboration highlights the strategic priorities for both Algeria and Indonesia.
