Minneapolis, Minnesota – Protests have erupted in Minneapolis following the detention of a five-year-old child during an immigration enforcement operation. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for reform of federal immigration policies.
The child, identified as Liam Conejo Ramos, was reportedly apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as he returned home. Video footage of the arrest, showing a visibly distraught child, quickly circulated online, fueling public anger. The incident occurred amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the current administration’s intensified efforts to combat illegal immigration.
Thousands of protestors braved sub-zero temperatures to voice their opposition to the immigration crackdown. Demonstrators chanted slogans demanding the withdrawal of ICE agents from the city. A local activist group had urged residents to boycott work, shopping, and school attendance in protest of the operation.
Numerous businesses, including stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues, reportedly closed their doors in solidarity with the protestors. The coordinated action aimed to disrupt economic activity and highlight the community’s opposition to the immigration enforcement measures.
The incident has also drawn international criticism. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, issued a statement calling on Washington to end practices that separate families. Türk expressed shock at the “dehumanizing portrayal and mistreatment of migrants and refugees,” questioning the disregard for their dignity and shared humanity.
Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro has also voiced concern over the detention of the child, stating that his office has been unable to ascertain the child’s whereabouts. Reports indicate that Liam may be held with his father in San Antonio, Texas. “We are working with our team to locate him to ensure his safety and demand his release from ICE custody,” Castro stated, adding that ICE has not provided information regarding the child’s detention.
This is a developing story. DZWatch will continue to provide updates as they become available.
