Algeria Summons French Diplomat Over Controversial Documentary

Algiers has summoned the French Chargé d’Affaires to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the broadcast of a program on French public television channel, France 2. The Algerian government has strongly condemned the program, labeling it a misleading piece filled with falsehoods and fabrications against Algeria.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that the broadcast fell far short of a genuine documentary. Instead, it characterized the program as containing profound offenses and unwarranted provocations aimed at the Algerian state, its institutions, and its symbols. The Ministry emphasized the gravity of the program’s content, highlighting what it described as a blatant assault on Algeria.

The Algerian government further stated that the actions of a public broadcasting channel could not be separated from the responsibility of its supervisory body. The statement also noted, contrary to established diplomatic norms and practices, the alleged contribution of the French Embassy in Algiers, and the personal involvement of the French Ambassador, in promoting the controversial broadcast. This, according to the Algerian government, reinforces the perception that the program received endorsement from official French entities.

Algeria views this incident as a continuation of escalating hostile actions designed to maintain a state of perpetual tension in Algerian-French relations. The government reiterated its strong condemnation of the program’s content and the unacceptable accusations it contained.

Concluding its statement, the Algerian government expressed its categorical rejection of the French Ambassador’s alleged involvement in activities deemed incompatible with his duties as defined by international laws and customs. Algeria affirmed its full right to take appropriate measures commensurate with the severity of these actions.
