Israeli aviation authorities have reportedly warned foreign airlines to brace for a potentially volatile period as regional tensions escalate. The warning comes amid heightened concerns over the ongoing standoff between the United States and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other.
According to Israeli media reports, Shmuel Zakai, head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Israel, cautioned international carriers that the coming days could be particularly sensitive. The message reportedly hinted at the possibility of Israel once again closing its airspace, a measure previously taken during periods of heightened conflict with Iran, including incidents in October-November 2024 and June 2025.
The rising tensions have already impacted international flight schedules to Israel. Several airlines have reportedly cancelled or suspended flights to Tel Aviv. Lufthansa, the German carrier, and Italian airline ITA, have allegedly extended the suspension of their overnight flights to Israel. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has also reportedly cancelled all flights to Israel until further notice. Air France had previously announced the cancellation of its flights to Tel Aviv, citing the increasing instability in the region.
Meanwhile, Israeli airlines, including El Al, Israir, and Arkia, are reportedly easing cancellation and modification policies for passengers concerned about potential disruptions. This move allows travelers to adjust their travel plans in anticipation of possible escalations, including a potential US military strike against Iran.
Earlier this week, Israeli Transportation Minister Miri Regev revealed that Israeli airlines had made preparations to evacuate their fleets from Israeli airports to various destinations worldwide. This precautionary measure aims to protect the aircraft from potential Iranian missile strikes in the event of a US-led attack on Iranian targets. The increased vigilance follows recent threats from Washington regarding potential military action.
