Algiers – Neighboring countries of Libya have renewed their commitment to a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process, while firmly rejecting foreign interference in the nation’s affairs. This commitment was underscored at a ministerial meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism of Libya’s neighboring countries, held in Tunis.
The meeting brought together the Foreign Ministers of Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt, and was also attended by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The gathering served as a crucial consultative platform, characterized by interactive and constructive discussions.
During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their joint position in support of political settlement efforts in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations. They emphasized the importance of restoring security and stability, safeguarding Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and preserving its national assets.
The meeting culminated in a joint statement emphasizing the principle of Libyan leadership and ownership of the political process. The statement stressed the necessity of involving various active forces within Libyan society and prioritizing dialogue and consensus as the sole means to create suitable conditions for presidential and parliamentary elections. Furthermore, it called for the unification of political, military, and economic institutions, responding to the Libyan people’s aspirations for security, stability, and prosperity.
The Tripartite Mechanism countries expressed their readiness to continue communication and consultation with all relevant Libyan parties, aiming to bridge viewpoints and support the national reconciliation process.
Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt reiterated their categorical rejection of all forms of foreign interference in Libyan affairs, emphasizing the need for the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from all Libyan territory. This, they asserted, would create a conducive environment for a comprehensive and sustainable political solution. The ministers emphasized the importance of a stable and unified Libya for the security and prosperity of the entire region.
The commitment from Libya’s neighbors signals a renewed push for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
