The Gara Djebilet iron ore project is poised to become a major employment hub, creating significant opportunities in the region. According to Chafaa Belaid, Director of Employment for the Bechar province, the project’s economic impact extends far beyond mining, promising substantial social and developmental advancements.
Belaid highlighted the project’s potential to generate approximately 5,000 direct jobs and an estimated 20,000 indirect positions. This includes stimulating investment across diverse sectors such as transportation, agriculture, commerce, and infrastructure development. He emphasized that Gara Djebilet represents a transformative opportunity for southwestern Algeria and the nation as a whole.
“This project will unlock significant economic and social prospects for the region,” Belaid stated. He further added that the project will contribute to diversifying Algeria’s revenue streams, bolstering the mining industry, and promoting economic sovereignty by reducing reliance on hydrocarbons.
Furthermore, the planned western mining railway line connecting Gara Djebilet with Bechar, Tindouf, and Oran is expected to break the isolation of southwestern regions. This infrastructural development promises to foster economic, social, and developmental dynamism, providing enhanced training, employment, and skill-building opportunities for the region’s youth. The railway will facilitate the transportation of ore and other goods, further stimulating economic activity.
