Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Project to Generate 25,000 Jobs

The Gara Djebilet iron ore project in Bechar province is poised to become a major employment generator, creating an estimated 5,000 direct and 20,000 indirect jobs. This was announced by Belaid Chaffa, the Director of Operations for the Bechar region.

Chaffa, speaking on Algerian radio, described the project as a “project of the century,” highlighting its potential to unlock significant economic and social opportunities for the southwestern region and the nation as a whole. The project is expected to bolster revenue streams, stimulate the mining and processing industries, and strengthen Algeria’s economic sovereignty by diversifying its resources beyond hydrocarbons.

Beyond its economic impact, the project is seen as a catalyst for social development and investment across various sectors. These include transportation, agriculture, commerce, and infrastructure. The development of the Gara Djebilet mine is expected to spur growth in these supporting industries, creating a ripple effect throughout the regional economy.

Furthermore, Chaffa unveiled plans for the Western Mining Railway project, a railway line connecting Gara Djebilet with Bechar, Tindouf, and Oran. This railway is expected to break the isolation of the southwestern regions, fostering economic and social dynamism. It will also provide training, employment, and practical experience opportunities for young people in these areas. The railway is considered crucial for the efficient transport of iron ore and other resources, further enhancing the project’s overall viability and impact.
