Algeria was elected in New York as Vice-Chair of the Bureau of the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations for the year 2026, during the opening of the committee’s regular session.
This election reflects the confidence Algeria enjoys and confirms its effective commitment and active participation in the work of this UN body. It is also a result of the attention the Algerian authorities pay to civil society, which has come to play a growing role in social, cultural, and economic fields.
The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations is a subsidiary body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It is specifically tasked with examining applications for consultative status submitted by non-governmental organizations, as well as evaluating reports submitted by organizations that already hold this status with ECOSOC.
It is worth noting that Algeria has been a member of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations since 2023.
