The Secretary General of the National Liberation Front, Abdelkrim Benmbarek, oversaw on Saturday a national seminar titled “The Nature of Security Threats and Their Impact on Security in the Region,” organized by the Permanent Committee for Foresight and Strategic Studies.
In his opening speech, the Secretary General emphasized that the concept of national security is no longer limited to its traditional dimensions but has become a comprehensive concept where political, economic, social, and developmental factors intersect. This, he stated, necessitates an in-depth analysis of the strategic environment and a precise understanding of the nature of challenges that may directly or indirectly affect the security and stability of the country.
Benmbarek explained that the seminar holds special importance as it addresses new security threats in the Sahel region and their repercussions on regional security, given that it is one of the most sensitive areas affected by rapid security disturbances.
He stressed that these threats are no longer confined within the borders of the Sahel-Saharan countries; instead, their consequences have extended to regional security as a whole. This comes amid the escalation of cross-border terrorist group activities, the growth of organized crime, the proliferation of weapons, smuggling networks, and irregular migration, as well as foreign interventions that have contributed to complicating the security scene and increasing its fragility.
He noted that these conditions have turned the Sahel region into a genuine flashpoint threatening the collective security of the entire region, requiring neighboring countries, led by Algeria, to maintain constant vigilance and adopt a long-term strategic vision.
The Secretary General also considered that Algeria plays three pivotal roles in the Sahel region: political mediation for the peaceful settlement of conflicts, leading and strengthening regional cooperation to confront cross-border threats, and supporting the development process in neighboring countries, particularly through the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation.
Furthermore, Benmbarek reaffirmed that Algerian policy is based on making the stability of the Sahel region a strategic priority, as it represents a vital security and political depth for Algeria and an integral part of its national security.
