“Tunis Declaration” Rejects International Guardianship Over Libya

Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, participated today in Tunis in the ministerial meeting of the tripartite mechanism of Libya’s neighboring countries. He was joined by Mohamed Ali Nafti, Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, and Badr Abdelatty, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Egyptian Expatriates.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting was attended by Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

The meeting of this consultative mechanism featured a rich and constructive interactive discussion among the foreign ministers of the three countries. They reaffirmed their common position supporting the ongoing political settlement process in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations, aimed at restoring security and stability in the country while preserving its sovereignty, independence, resources, and unity.

The meeting concluded with the issuance of a joint statement emphasizing the necessity of Libyan leadership and ownership of the political process, with the participation of all active forces in Libyan society. It highlighted the importance of prioritizing dialogue and consensus to lead the country toward presidential and parliamentary elections, as well as unifying political, military, and economic institutions to meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for security, stability, and prosperity.

The three countries also affirmed their readiness to communicate and consult with various active Libyan parties to bridge viewpoints for the benefit and interest of the Libyan people.

In the same context, the joint statement renewed the three countries’ rejection of all forms of foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs and stressed the need to withdraw mercenaries and foreign fighters from all parts of the country.
