The National Liberation Front (FLN) party called on citizens and social partners on Sunday to exercise “vigilance and responsibility” regarding the controversy surrounding the “traffic law and fuel prices” and to avoid being led by rumors aimed at the country’s stability.
In its statement, the party emphasized that the new draft law does not aim to pressure ordinary citizens but seeks to stop the “road terrorism” that claims more than 5,000 victims annually.
The statement explained that severe penalties, including imprisonment, are exclusively directed at serious cases, such as causing fatal accidents while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The party also reassured the public that the law is still a “draft” under study at the Council of the Nation and is open for enrichment and amendment through a joint committee to ensure a balanced and fair legal text.
Regarding the “alarmist” wave concerning gasoline prices, the FLN explained that the increase is “limited and slight” and came in response to the demands of gas station owners to ensure a profit margin that maintains service continuity.
The party stressed that fuel prices in Algeria remain among the lowest in the world, thanks to the significant subsidies provided by the state to cover the difference from the actual price.
Furthermore, the party strongly warned against attempts to exploit these issues to undermine stability, calling on unions to prioritize serious dialogue and not rush into issuing statements that could harm the national interest.
It also praised the consultative meetings between the Ministry of Interior and social partners, considering them the best way to address professional concerns away from “malicious maneuvers.”
