The Ministry of Health and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving health services and enhancing assistance provided to migrants and refugees. According to a ministry statement, the MoU was signed on Thursday evening by the Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene, and the Director General of the IOM, Amy Pope. This agreement reflects the commitment of both parties to strengthening partnership relations and expanding cooperation to improve health care for migrants and refugees while enhancing the health response to related challenges.
The initiative aims to improve health services and boost assistance for migrants and refugees, particularly vulnerable groups. Cooperation areas include building the capacity of health professionals through targeted training programs, supporting health facilities based on specific needs, and preparing for health emergencies and crises.
The agreement also seeks to strengthen health monitoring capabilities in border areas, improve the effectiveness of the epidemiological surveillance system, exchange expertise, ensure access to health services, and conduct studies on shared interests.
The Minister of Health noted that the signing of this memorandum is part of the state’s commitment to the principles of humanitarian solidarity and its ongoing dedication to ensuring the right to health for refugees and migrants, in accordance with national laws and relevant international charters. He added that this approach is rooted in the values of the Algerian people and the principles established by the liberation revolution, based on supporting just causes, respecting human dignity, and consolidating values of solidarity.
He also highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination and consultation with international partners to help develop cooperation mechanisms and improve the health response to various challenges.
For her part, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration expressed her appreciation for the efforts made in providing health care for refugees and migrants, praising the adopted policy and measures taken to ensure their access to medical care and services. She highlighted Algeria’s strategic role as a factor of stability and solidarity in the region, confirming the organization’s ongoing readiness to continue strengthening cooperation with the health sector.
