Bill Proposed to Make Greenland the 51st US State

A Republican member of Congress from Florida has introduced a bill to annex Greenland and make it the 51st U.S. state, following threats by President Donald Trump to take control of the autonomous Danish territory.

Representative Randy Fine stated on Monday that his new legislation would allow Trump to “take any necessary step to annex or acquire Greenland.”

The bill would also require the Trump administration to submit a report to Congress detailing the changes to federal law necessary to allow the Arctic island to become a U.S. state.

The U.S. President has raised concerns among authorities in Denmark and Greenland by announcing that he would seize the vast Arctic island “one way or another.”

Trump insisted that Greenland, which is rich in rare earth minerals, must come under American control, claiming the territory is vital for national security.

Trump stated that Russia or China would take Greenland if the United States did not do so.

In response, the Prime Minister of Denmark and the head of the Greenlandic government affirmed their unified position rejecting the United States’ efforts to take over the Arctic island.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, responded to Trump’s remarks by saying, “If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark, we choose Denmark.”
