Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Lotfi Boudjemaa, confirmed that Algeria is qualified to become a regional hub for international commercial arbitration and the settlement of disputes related to investment and international trade.
During the opening of an international conference titled “International Arbitration, Sovereignty, and Alternative Means of Dispute Resolution,” attended by members of the government, the Minister explained that the conference’s intention to recommend the establishment of the Algiers Center for Dispute Resolution would effectively contribute to achieving goals that serve all parties. He noted that Algeria, given its strategic geographical location, is well-positioned to serve as a regional center for international commercial arbitration and investment dispute resolution.
The Minister also highlighted that such a move would enhance the attraction of foreign direct investment, which plays a pivotal role in supporting comprehensive economic development. He emphasized that the existence of an accredited national arbitration center is among the fundamental guarantees that provide reassurance to foreign investors.
In this regard, the Minister stressed that this step contributes to strengthening legal and judicial security by ensuring the neutrality, integrity, and independence of the center. He noted that international arbitration is an effective legal tool based on the will of the parties, independence of decision-making, and respect for legal and cultural specificities, making it a focus of increasing interest for countries and international institutions as a means to improve the business climate and attract investment.
The Minister also pointed to other alternative methods such as mediation and conciliation, highlighting that they represent advanced human and legal approaches aimed at resolving disputes in a consensual spirit and fostering a culture of dialogue rather than litigation.
Furthermore, Boudjemaa stated that these steps are the result of the directives and keen interest of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, whose vision has shaped a promising Algerian experience in the investment field and a tangible reform model, as evidenced by the provisions of the 2022 Investment Law.
