Ooredoo Algeria organized the 84th session of its Press Club under the theme “5G, Internet of Things, and Smart Cities,” exploring the new horizons opened by these technologies. This first educational meeting with the media for the year 2026 served as an interactive space for dialogue and the exchange of visions, highlighting the structural role of next-generation telecommunications infrastructure in building smart, sustainable cities capable of facing current challenges and future stakes.
During the session, Abdelmoumen Benmesbah, a researcher and expert in modern technologies, provided an in-depth presentation on the conceptual and operational foundations of the smart city. He reviewed its technological pillars, including high-speed connectivity, the Internet of Things (IoT), smart data management platforms, and artificial intelligence, alongside cybersecurity. He emphasized the central position of 5G networks as the solid foundation for this new urban era.
Presenting concrete practical examples, Ali Jalal Fetnassi, Head of New Business Solutions at Ooredoo Algeria, highlighted how 5G technology enables the coordination of highly sensitive urban services in real-time. This contributes to improving the quality of life, optimizing resource utilization, and enhancing the attractiveness of regions and urban spaces.
Benmesbah also cited the new smart city project in Ghenzat, Setif Province, as a pioneering national experience. The project relies on the advanced capabilities of the 5G network to ensure comprehensive and reliable connectivity for various smart devices.
This practical model embodies the ability of next-generation networks to host interconnected urban systems, where data is transformed into an intelligent tool for directing and managing public facilities, services, and local community infrastructure, ensuring energy efficiency and high performance.
Journalists and media representatives expressed significant interest in this strategic issue, with rich discussions and constructive interactions prevailing throughout the session. This allowed them to deepen their understanding of the technologies at the core of smart cities and grasp the dimensions, challenges, and vast opportunities offered by 5G technology.
Through this initiative, Ooredoo Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to playing a fundamental role in the emergence of smarter, more inclusive, and more sustainable cities, where technology serves as an effective lever for economic, social, and environmental progress.
