The Washington Post reports a growing sense of isolation for the United States as complaints and criticism surge globally over its handling of the deteriorating situation in Gaza. Read more about the potential costs on U.S. foreign policy in the article by Karen DeYoung.

The Washington Post recently highlighted the acknowledgment from a high-ranking U.S. official regarding increasing complaints and criticism from both domestic and international fronts due to the deteriorating conditions in Gaza.

In a report titled “Biden’s Support for Israel May Come at a Cost to U.S. Foreign Policy,” Karen DeYoung, the Senior National Security Correspondent at The Washington Post, elucidated how U.S. allies are growing frustrated with Washington’s perceived failure to exert sufficient influence to protect Palestinian lives.

The report underscores that President Joe Biden’s stance on the Gaza conflict, despite acknowledging Israeli transgressions and pressing for civilian protection, could impose a cost on his standing both domestically and internationally.

Not only foreign partners but some officials within the White House and the State Department have expressed objections due to the repercussions on U.S. leadership.

The official cited in the article stated that Washington is now hearing “complaints and criticism, not only from friends but from around the world. Not just internationally, but domestically” as Gaza faces intense Israeli airstrikes and ground attacks, resulting in a rising civilian death toll and the region turning into rubble.

The article delves into the isolation the United States is experiencing in international forums concerning Gaza, with the official noting, “The most obvious isolation is in international forums like the United Nations, where the United States was almost alone in opposing Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Escalating Disagreements
This comes after President Biden warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week that Israel is losing global support due to its indiscriminate shelling of Gaza. Biden expressed concerns about Washington losing its “moral leadership” globally because of its support for Israel.

Political experts believe Biden’s recent statements about Israel losing international support and the necessity for a change in Netanyahu’s government signal a significant shift in the U.S. position on the Israeli war in Gaza, possibly indicating the beginning of substantial negotiations.

Biden’s remarks, following a call with Netanyahu last Monday, appear to widen the gap between the two leaders regarding the war and the future of the Palestinian issue. While Biden asserted that “the existence of Jews is literally on the line,” Netanyahu insisted that the only person fit to lead the Israeli government right now is someone who can resist U.S. pressure.

Addressing Democratic donors in Washington last week, Biden criticized the hardline Israeli government, stating that “Netanyahu needs to change his approach.” He added, “I think he has to change. The current government in Israel makes it hard for him to move.”

In its analysis, The New York Times reported that Biden’s statements represent the most significant shift in U.S. language on Israel since the Hamas resistance movement’s operation on October 7th last year.

The newspaper added that the rift between Israel and the United States is now erupting publicly with Biden’s statements.
