President Tebboune Emphasizes Need for Comprehensive Approach to Address Roots of Violent Extremism

Prime Minister Sifi Gharib participated today, Saturday, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in the session dedicated to discussing the report of the African Union Peace and Security Council on the state of peace and security in Africa, as part of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit.

On this occasion, the President of the Republic delivered a speech to the participants, read on his behalf by the Prime Minister, in which he praised the efforts of the President of the brotherly Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during his chairmanship of the Peace and Security Council for this month, and the important report he presented during a sensitive period characterized by geopolitical complexities and increasing security pressures.

The President also highlighted Algeria’s firm position regarding the conflicts witnessed by the continent, renewing full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Regarding the African Sahel region, President Tebboune stressed the necessity of adopting a comprehensive and integrated approach that takes into account the close link between security and development and addresses the social and economic roots fueling violent extremism.

On the Libyan issue, the President renewed Algeria’s support for the Libyan-Libyan political path and for continental and international efforts aimed at bringing the views of the Libyan brothers closer, emphasizing that the only solution to the crisis lies in organizing free and transparent elections and the complete and immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries to ensure Libya’s unity and sovereignty.

Regarding the situation in Sudan, the President expressed deep regret over the humanitarian tragedy and unprecedented violations, valuing the pivotal role of the African Union in its efforts to settle the crisis, and calling for an immediate ceasefire and the launch of a sovereign and inclusive Sudanese-Sudanese national dialogue that ends the bloodshed and meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

In the Horn of Africa, Algeria emphasized the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and to settle disputes through peaceful means via constructive dialogue within the framework of African Union mechanisms.

Concerning the decolonization process in Western Sahara, the President affirmed Algeria’s support for the efforts made by the United Nations to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions, while emphasizing the importance of continued constructive engagement in the political process under UN auspices and supporting the role of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy.

Algeria also called for countering illegal foreign interference, considering it one of the most prominent factors fueling instability and hindering conflict resolution and democratic building processes on the continent.

The President considered that facing these challenges requires the full activation of the African Peace and Security Architecture and turning the principle of “African solutions to African problems” into a concrete practical reality.
