Thirty-nine people have been killed following a collision between two trains in southern Spain, according to reports from the Spanish Radio and Television Corporation cited by Reuters.
Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente warned on the “X” platform that the “impact was horrific” and that the death toll is likely to rise given the “extremely worrying information” regarding the accident.
Images broadcast by the public channel TVE showed the two collided trains surrounded by crowds of people, while ambulances were deployed and emergency teams worked to rescue the injured.
According to the Transport Minister, the rear carriages of an Iryo train traveling from Malaga in the Andalusia region to the capital, Madrid, derailed near Adamuz, about 200 kilometers north of Malaga. It then collided with a Renfe train traveling in the opposite direction on an adjacent track toward the city of Huelva.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that he is “closely following developments” and that the central government in Madrid is “cooperating with other competent authorities.”
