The Algiers cleaning company, “Netcom,” has established a special program for the holy month of Ramadan, deploying 4,500 workers and 390 trucks to intensify waste collection and clean public spaces across various municipalities within its jurisdiction.
Nassima Yaacoubi, head of the communication and development department at “Netcom,” stated that in anticipation of Ramadan, a special program was launched prior to the month’s start. This includes cleaning markets, areas surrounding mosques, and leisure spaces such as the Sablettes Promenade, the Ben Aknoun “Civil Concord” Zoo and Leisure Park, and the El Harrach water source.
The program takes into account the specific nature of this month, which sees an increase in waste volume by up to 18% compared to regular days, rising from approximately 1,100 tons per day to about 1,300 tons. This increase is primarily attributed to food waste.
To address this, the company has mobilized significant material and human resources, including 4,500 workers and 390 trucks of various types, such as waste collection vehicles, mechanical sweepers, and road-washing trucks. Additionally, the fleet has been reinforced with 1,500 extra containers, including those specifically designated for collecting bread, which sees a surge during this period.
Yaacoubi noted that 15 tons of bread were collected in 2025, pointing out that bread requires special treatment and cannot be mixed with regular household waste, necessitating additional resources for separate collection.
Work during the holy month will be conducted on a 24-hour shift system, with intensified interventions to prevent waste accumulation and maintain environmental cleanliness.
Regarding awareness efforts, the official mentioned that “Netcom” launched a campaign twenty days before Ramadan to encourage citizens to rationalize consumption and limit waste due to its negative economic, environmental, and health impacts.
She reminded the public that the accumulation of waste, of which organic matter constitutes more than 50%, leads to decomposition, foul odors, and the spread of insects, posing a risk to public health and marring the general appearance. Citizens and merchants are urged to respect waste disposal times and use appropriate bags while ensuring waste sorting to facilitate the work of cleaning agents and ensure cleanliness throughout the holy month.
