French football star Thierry Henry stated that he grew up in his neighborhood watching the Africa Cup of Nations and following major stars such as Algerian football legend Lakhdar Belloumi.
During his appearance on the CBS Sports Golazo platform, where he provided analysis on the Africa Cup of Nations final, Henry said: “I grew up in my neighborhood following the Africa Cup of Nations competitions and watching great stars like Lakhdar Belloumi, who was very famous in Algeria.”
Regarding the final in which Senegal was crowned with the continental title, Henry emphasized that “it was not just a sporting match, but it also left an image of a game that spiraled out of control. Between a Senegalese goal disallowed without VAR and a penalty awarded to Morocco in the final moments, the match descended into an atmosphere of extreme tension, leading to the Teranga Lions temporarily leaving the pitch.”
He added: “I do not agree with Senegal’s decision to leave the field, but I understand their frustration.”
The former Arsenal star also criticized the standard of officiating, stating: “The referees did not meet expectations in this tournament, and the responsibility lies with the Confederation of African Football, which must improve their performance.”
