Mexico is experiencing a wave of violence and street chaos as the CJNG gang announced a general mobilization and began targeting government, military, police, prison, and shopping center facilities. This escalation followed the killing of the gang’s leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” by security forces in Jalisco.
The confrontation led to a violent street war, with images and videos circulating of the drug cartel attacking airports, commercial centers, civilian vehicles, and police units. These attacks, which included setting vehicles on fire, resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries. Several airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines, and Aeromexico, canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta, a coastal resort where tourists captured footage of thick smoke rising from the fires.
The violence, which has spread across more than six states, is a familiar scene for Mexicans who have witnessed successive governments wage war against drug cartels for two decades, a conflict that has devastated large parts of the country.
In a relatively short period, the Jalisco cartel has evolved into a transcontinental criminal organization. It now rivals its former allies in the Sinaloa Cartel, once led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States.
