The Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdennour Rabehi, conducted an inspection visit to the ongoing restoration works at several landmarks and palaces in the ancient city of the Casbah. The visit included the Palace of Hassan Pasha, Dar al-Casbah, the former headquarters of the Bab El Oued administrative district, the Palace of Ahmed Pasha, the Ali Bitchin Mosque, and Dar al-Hamra.
Detailed presentations were provided regarding the various restoration and decoration works characterizing these landmarks, particularly concerning the reinforcement of foundations and ceilings, as well as the restoration of floors and wooden doors. The Wali issued instructions to the various stakeholders on the necessity of respecting contractual deadlines while committing to high quality in execution and preserving the original decorative styles.
He also emphasized the need to rehabilitate the surrounding areas and facades of buildings adjacent to these landmarks. He suggested studying the possibility of reclaiming vacant buildings to create open spaces and installing elevators in the palaces to facilitate access for people with special needs and the elderly.
During the visit, the Wali expressed his admiration for the work of young graduates from the Institute of Archaeology involved in the restoration, praising their dedication to heritage preservation. Rabehi stressed the importance of training youth in maintenance crafts and decorative arts, and directed the installation of identification plaques highlighting the history of these landmarks and the details of their restoration.
On its National Day, celebrated on February 23, the ancient city of the Casbah stands as one of the most significant historical sites, having been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992. To preserve this legacy, provincial authorities are implementing a comprehensive program to restore and rehabilitate historical landmarks, mosques, palaces, and buildings, while also developing tourist routes to enhance the area’s appeal as a major historical and tourism destination.
