President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in a historic address to both chambers of the Algerian Parliament on Monday, underscored the establishment of a commendable tradition where the nation’s highest official directly communicates through the Parliament. Expressing pride in addressing the parliamentary representatives, Tebboune hailed them as the foundational element in reconstructing the institutional framework of a new Algeria. He commended their integrity, noting this Parliament as the first to be elected without the influence of corrupt money.

This occasion marked the first such address by a President since the late President Boumediene in 1977. Tebboune emphasized his commitment to constructive dialogue and transparency as fundamental approaches to public affairs management. He highlighted the political deadlock and social conditions on the eve of February 2019, which nearly jeopardized the nation’s stability and opened doors for adversaries.

In his speech, President Tebboune acknowledged the call of millions of Algerians demanding national salvation, vowing relentless efforts towards establishing a new republic. He outlined the challenges faced in implementing this agenda, including the COVID-19 health crisis and its repercussions.

Addressing corruption, President Tebboune revealed the recovery of assets worth 30 billion dollars, stolen in past misgovernance. He added that efforts are ongoing with European nations to repatriate funds illicitly transferred abroad.

His vision for Algeria involves a commitment to constitutional reforms aimed at establishing a rule-of-law state, coupled with economic reforms and reinforcing the social character of governance. These steps are vital in his mission to restore public trust and stability, combating artificially created shortages and destabilization attempts by remnants of the previous regime.
